Cingular Wireless Prepares Alabama Customers
For New Area Code Changes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless is preparing customers for the January 7, 2002 area code changes affecting the Southwest portion of the state. Recently, the 251 area code was added to serve the growing area of Southwest Alabama currently served by area code 334.
"Cingular wants to make this transformation as easy as possible for our valued customers," said Bill Withers, Cingular General Manager for South Alabama and NW Florida. "Due to our technology, many Cingular customers do not have to visit a store location for reprogramming. Our digital network has made it possible to program the 251 area code over the air, again adding to the ease and convenience for customers. Customer's that still use analog phones will definitely need to have them manually reprogrammed!"

Area code 251 will include all of Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, and Washington Counties, and parts of five other counties, including the communities of Brewton, Evergreen, Monroeville, Grove Hill, Jackson and Chatom.
Until January 6th of next year, customers can dial either 334 or the new 251 area code to make calls into and within the new 251 area. On January 7, 2002, only the new 251 area code can be used to complete those calls in the Nine County area affected by the change.
