CRTC Unveils New 778 Area Code

VANCOUVER (CKNW/AM980) -- The CRTC has announced the new area code to be added to the current 604 dialing area on the south coast.

The new code is 778 and, starting in November of 2001, it will be applied to all new numbers for phones, cell phones, faxes, modems and pagers.

Since the area codes will be in effect in the same general calling area, everyone in the Greater Vancouver Regional District, plus Abbotsford and Mission, will have to dial a 10-digit number every time they pick up the phone. The change takes effect in Spring 2001.

Residents living outside of the area can stick to seven digits for the forseeable future.
