Minnesota is running out of telephone number prefixes in the region served by the 612 area code. This is happening because of increased demand for new telephone numbers used for such services as fax machines, pagers, wireless telephone, second telephone lines, voice mail and other competitive services.
On July 12, 1998, the region served by Minnesota's 612 area code will split into two area codes: 651 and 612.
- The 651 area code will serve St. Paul and the communities of Arden Hills, Eagan, Forest Lake, Farmington, Hastings, Roseville, Lino Lakes, Mendota Heights, New Brighton, North Branch, Rosemount, Shoreview and other communities to the east, including Red Wing and Wabasha.
- The 612 area code will be kept by Minneapolis and the communities of Apple Valley, Blaine, Bloomington, Burnsville, Columbia Heights, Fridley, Lakeville, Mounds View, Richfield, and other communities to the west.
- The 218, 320, and 507 area codes will not change.
Ten-Digit Local Dialing
The introduction of Minnesota's new 651 area code will not affect the size, shape or location of your local calling area (that area in which all calls are local). However, the way you dial local calls between the 612 and 651 area codes will change. To make a local call between area codes it will be necessary to dial ten digits (the three-digit area code plus the seven-digit phone number). For example, if you place a local call from the 612 area code to a number in the 651 area code, you would need to dial 651-XXX-XXXX. Do not dial a "1" or a "0" before the ten-digit local number. Dialing a "1" may incur long distance charges, while dialing a "0" will route your call to a telephone operator.
To complete a local call within the same area code, dial only the seven-digit number. However, any local call can be made using all ten digits. From July 12, 1998, to January 10, 1999, callers may dial either seven- or ten-digit local phone numbers and either the new 651 area code or current 612 area code. On January 10, 1999, ten-digit dialing becomes mandatory for local calls between the 612 and 651 area codes.
The following chart illustrates the different types of telephone dialing. The example assumes that the caller is in the 612 area code:
Type of Call Required Dialing Example Within local calling area, in same area code 7- or 10-digit dialing 555-0122 or 612-555-0123 Within local calling area, to another area code 0-digit dialing 651-555-0123 Direct-dial long distance "1" plus 10 digit 1-651-555-9876 Operator-assisted long distance "0" plus 10 digits 0-651-555-9876 During the transition dialing period
During a six-month transition dialing period -- from July 12, 1998, to January 10, 1999 -- local calls can be dialed using either seven or ten digits. Residential customers should use this time to notify people of the new dialing pattern, and to reprogram special features such as automatic dialing, speed dialing, and call forwarding. If you are a business customer, be aware that some phone systems may require modification in order to dial a ten-digit telephone number. Also, some telephone equipment used by businesses will not recognize the new area code until that equipment has been reprogrammed or upgraded. Please check with your equipment provider. Any necessary updates or changes to your telephone equipment must be made prior to the mandatory dialing date to make sure than phone calls will be received.Other information specific to the state of Minnesota:
Beginning July 12, 1998, businesses can test their telephone equipment to determine if it recognizes the new 651 area code by calling the following free test number: 1-651-296-2644. If a call to the test number does not go through, contact your equipment provider. If your equipment is not the cause of your problem, call the U S WEST Area Code Service Center: 1-800-441-5516.
