NANP Area Code History: 1997
Now that an ample supply (for the time being) of area codes were
available for assignment, Regulators rushed to grant relief to dozens of
area codes. New technologies coupled with the possibility of multiple
local carriers, thanks to the Telecom Act of 1996, meant that dozens of
new communities would suddenly need millions of available numbers.
